What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a way for young people and adult learners alike to earn while they learn in employment, while gaining a vocational qualification and a real future. Hiring apprentices or training existing staff will help your business to grow your own talent by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

An apprenticeship is a programme of learning and qualifications, completed in the workplace that provides employees with the skills, knowledge, confidence and competencies they need to progress in their chosen career or industry.

We believe the key to apprenticeships is providing high quality training that will benefit both apprentices and employers in the workplace.

Apprenticeship programmes follow an approved ‘National Framework’ to allow employed learners to achieve their Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) at levels 2, 3, 4 and above with appropriate essential skills according to the identified level. As part of the framework you will also be required to complete two relevant assignments – Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Health & Safety.

Frameworks are now available across most occupational sectors throughout Wales. We offer frameworks across the following areas:

Levels of Apprenticeships

There are three levels of apprenticeships as certain jobs require different levels of qualifications, i.e. some are higher than others. The level you can apply for will depend on your current skills and qualifications.

Apprenticeships are available in the following three levels for those aged 16 years old and over;

1. Foundation Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes)

Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2 which provides the skills that apprentices need for their chosen career and allow entry to an Apprenticeship.

2. Apprenticeship (equivalent to two A-level passes)

Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 3.

To start at this level, apprentices should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed a Foundation Apprenticeship.

3. Higher Apprenticeships

Higher Apprenticeships work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 4 or 5.

Who are they for?

Apprenticeships are available to all ages, whether you are being employed as an apprentice in a new job or as part of training at your existing workplace across Wales.
