Apprenticeships for All – Supported Shared Apprenticeship Programme

Dion Dimitrikas – His journey so far…

Dion age 23, lives in Caerleon and he was given a diagnosis of autism when he was very young. He applied to become part of the ‘Supported Shared Apprenticeship’ scheme with Elite and Cambrian Training and was really pleased to have been accepted onto a Level 2 apprenticeship in Business Administration.

He secured a position at Nevill Hall Hospital in Monmouthshire within the ‘Digital Health Records’ department, where he has become a valued member of the team. He has thrived in his position there, and in his personal confidence and general well-being has developed as a result. He has had a supportive group of colleagues around him that have been there to encourage and guide him throughout his apprenticeship journey so far.

He has impressed his line manager Rachel Edwards with his work ethic and ability to sustain his concentration on his tasks. He continually meets his daily key performance targets and is keen to learn new skills. Rachel says: “Dion is a lovely young man, and he has become an important part of the team. He was very apprehensive when he first joined us because he realised what an important role he had been asked to do and he did not want to make any mistakes. Over time, we have seen Dion grow in his confidence and he is now happy and willing to undertake new responsibilities within the team. For example, he has been highly successful with his additional responsibility as a mentor to a few of the new internships and he has provided them with encouragement, support and advice. They now look to Dion as a role model, and they feel comfortable about being able to ask him for help.”

Dion would recommend other people to do an apprenticeship as he believes he has gained so much from doing it. Dion says: “I love my job and I feel really happy and confident in the role that I do. I have been well supported by the staff in work and the training officers from Cambrian Training. I have learnt new office skills, how to use a range of computer software and how to effectively use the office equipment. I am learning new skills and knowledge all the time and it has worked out really well for me.”
